Sunday, May 7, 2017 – Day 7
I burned 896 calories.  Coach Kenzie is only 25 years old but she has a killer sense for music.  She plays this and this.  Indeed a mysteriously mature young lady with an obviously very advanced understanding of good music.  I woke up with a smoked back and it took forever to loosen up, I even foam rolled before class.  Ended up cooking for 5 hours standing.

I had 5 meals each in the 480 calorie range.
For the day I burned 3,178 calories.
I took in 2,379 calories.
The net deficit was 799 calories.
I slept 7:20
I drank 123 oz of water.
Bottom line – Today was a win.

For those who asked…yes I still have a training dairy and yes you can still see it.  It’s here and I usually update it every few days.

Saturday, May 6, 2017 – Day 6
I got to the dojo at 7:45 am (b/c I take Aliya to swim practice at 7) and spent a LONG TIME loosening up b/c I’m old and super fatigued right now.  I got all my weapons work and my test stuff done twice before the next person showed up.  The class was awesome and run by Main Sensei.  Lots of advanced stuff but I love how sensei teaches.  He has us do things at such an elementary level step by step that you’re doing the whole technique before you realize what you did!  He’s an amazing teacher.  I learned Ushiro Tekubitori Nikkyo (the video is Ura but you can get the idea) and discovered that this technique is going into the “Z Emergency Kit”.  Overall stellar class with great breathing exercises at the end.   I burned up 780 calories in class.

I had 4 meals each in the 480 calorie range.
Meal 5 was with my bro and his family, around the 600 calorie range (Tandoori meat and 2 Samosas)
For the day I burned 3,274 calories.
I took in 2,376 calories.
The net deficit was 898 calories.
I slept 6:51
I drank 122 oz of water.
Bottom line – Today was a win but still need more sleep!!!!

For those who asked…yes I still have a training dairy and yes you can still see it.  It’s here and I usually update it every few days.

This is a documentation of day 5 of 39 (I update the morning after a day is complete)

Friday, May 5, 2017 – Day 5
OTF at 6:30 am and burned 892 calories.  Now here’s the thing:  I don’t work out in the mornings simply because I like my sleep.  Case in point:  class started at 6:30, my time to leave the house was 6:00, so I set the alarm for 5 am.  I ended up waking up at 4:24 am because I was scared I’d over sleep!!!!!  That part sucked but the workout was right up my alley.  My break through happened after I realized that rowing is now a better warmup than the treadmill – probably because my fitness is higher.  Then we got to some intervals and I was a happy big daddy!!!!  They were basically power intervals – short intensity / short recovery – just what my body is designed for, I could have done those all day.  In the evening I took Aliya to her birthday dinner at Epic Chop House and was worried about eating.  I ended up having 12 oz Filet, some asparagus and ate some bread – turns out it wasn’t hard at all.

I had 4 meals each in the 480 calorie range.
My last meal was at Epic and I figure it was close to 700 calories.
For the day I burned 3,086 calories.
I took in 2,514 calories.
The net deficit was 573 calories.
I slept 4:25
I drank 147 oz of water.
Bottom line – Today was a win.

I had 5 meals each in the 480 calorie range.
For the day I burned 3,426 calories.
I took in 2,767 calories.
The net deficit was 659 calories.
I slept 4:25 (stressed out about waking up for 6:30 am class, woke up at 4:25 am)
I drank 120 oz of water.
Bottom line – Today was a win but I am tired.

Wednesday, May 3, 2017 – Day 3
2 hours of Aikido in the evening and burned 441 calories.   Super advanced stuff, spent most of the class confused.  Did more Jiwaza and jacked it all up.

I had 5 meals each in the 480 calorie range.
For the day I burned 3,173 calories.
I took in 2,427 calories.
The net deficit was 746 calories.
I slept 7:25 (used Sleep Works but Amira got in our bed at 1 am)
I drank 129 oz of water.
Bottom line – Today was a win but I was hungry at the end of the day.

Weight Loss Challenge – Day 2 Of 39

Tuesday, May 2, 2017 – Day 2
Got my PRP shot in the knees and then 2 hours later I did 2 hours of Aikido in the evening and burned 392 calories.   We started the class with stuff I can do but then quickly went into Koshi loads and taking the falls.  The loads means you’re literally supporting someones weight on your back – I got a big dude and it strained the crap out of my right knee.  I got wise after that and didn’t do anything that I considered high risk.  That’s a big thing for me – to back down when the risk is high.  It’s taken 3 years of my sensei’s contextualizing alternative thoughts.  Meaning, old Z would do something regardless of the risk because “I don’t want or need a hall pass.  I want to do the prescribed amount / technique, etc.  I don’t want any concessions.”  The sensei’s have taught me that at my age and mobility there are certain things I don’t have to prove to anyone – being safe and able to train another day is a higher priority than to do something that causes injury.  Case in point:  a few years ago I broke a rib while preparing for my Concept 2 Indoor Rowing world ranking.  I got a great rank but I broke a rib and it took months to get back to normal.  Now during Aikido if I come out of a fall wrong and hit the mat in the general area of the healed rib – it wrecks me and causes pain and an aversion to do that fall.  It’s all learning all the time.
I had 5 meals each in the 480 calorie range.
For the day I burned 2,996 calories.
I took in 2,427 calories.
The net deficit was 569 calories.
I slept 8:34 (used Sleep Works)
I drank 114 oz of water.
Bottom line – I felt like I ate alot and also used my full regimen of preworkout products.  I also weighed myself to see what was happening and I was down 4 more pounds.  Today was a win.

Weight Loss Challenge – Day 1 of 39

Orange Theory Fitness

So here’s the deal:  I have a massive athletic career in my 50 year old body – from being an NCAA I swimmer to Iron distance triathlete to elite cyclist to Aikido student, heck I even did Crossfit for a year.  I know all about performance, how to get it out of my body and the bodies of the people who have trusted me to get it out of theirs in a coaching scenario.  But at this moment in time at age 50 and being 100% committed to Aikido and progressing to Black Belt (and beyond) I found myself in a weird place.  I was fit for Aikido but not “fit” by my own standard.  So I decided to give OTF a try.  I knew very little about it but 2 things I knew were that it’s been the #1 fitness franchise for 4 years and never had a studio close down.  So I signed up and have loved every one of my 28 workouts AND I’ve shaken the rust off my fitness… “Z fitness” is coming.

They released a weight loss challenge and signed up for it.  For those of you who know me understand that me and weight loss are like oil and vinegar.  Without going into the details I believe it is not right for any of us to judge ourselves (or others) on their appearance.  We should judge ourselves and others on function – performance.  I have made a profession of helping people break the link between the value they have in the Universe to the number on the scale.  (another topic for another time).  But for me at age 50 I have a curiosity about what I have under the hood.  I wondered “can I win this weight loss challenge?”  That in turn led to 25 million other questions… what do I eat, how do I eat, what should I do differently working out, etc.  And because I have no experience in making the scale move I decided to be a student and learn.

This is a documentation of day 1 of 39.

Saturday, April 22,  2017
I spent the week after getting home from Norway preparing for the “weigh in”.  My weight at the time was 230 – no clue if that is heavy for me or not but I will say this – I had fun in Norway and didn’t workout a ton 🙂  To prepare I pulled out the Precision Nutrition books and re-read them.  I also told Kim what I was doing because she does the family cooking and my eating changes would impact how much she cooks.  My daughter Aliya aka The Beast (b/c she’s a bad ass swimmer) asked if I could make her some meals so I make her breakfast and lunch now.  I also downloaded MyFitness Pal, an app to track your calories.  I also dove into the owners manual of my Garmin 735 XT to find out what it could do besides track steps, track sleep, etc.  Turns out it will track all of my calorie expenditure.  I also started an Advocare Herbal Cleanse.

Friday, April 28, 2017
OTF did the weigh in and I weighed 226.9 lbs  I also spent this week learning about how many calories I should eat and in what macronutrient ratios.  I’m not worried about the workouts, I’ll do OTF 4 times a week and Aikido 4 times – plenty of workout stress.  I consulted with my team (the MOST important thing I did):
Kim Buttar – my best friend, wife and #1 fan.
Jonathan Weiner – my aikido teacher and a guy who has dropped 85 pounds in the last 2 years.
Sarah Tuczynski – my main OTF coach.
Josh Szymanowski – personal trainer and friend who has been on my health board of directors for 5 years.
The net product of consulting with them was I learned how to food prep, made my schedule of training / eating / timing and effectively turned this 39 day fight into manageable 1 day game plans – on any given day I just need to win that day.  The results will be what they will be.

Monday, May 1, 2017 – Day 1
Got my allergy shot and then I did OTF in the morning, got 19 splat points and burned 840 calories.
I did 2 hours of Aikido in the evening and burned 592 calories.  It was a Monday class which meant I did extra training and we were on full automatic the whole night.  I ended the night with some Jiwaza test practice (it looks like this).  The first time out I made a ton of mistakes and was in oxygen debt the whole time.  We ended it while another student did the same thing.  I sat, stretched and cleared my mind in the back of the room.  And I had a thought:  “if this is the focus, nothing else today matters.  Nothing before right now counted, this counts, get your head out of your ass and go do what you know how to do.”  I got another chance and rocked it.
I had 5 meals each in the 480 calorie range.
For the day I burned 3,873 calories.
I took in 2,341 calories.
The net deficit was 1,532 calories.
I slept 7:01 (need more but Amira came into bed with us)
I drank 138 oz of water.
Bottom line – today was a win.

Natural Remedies for Asthmatics

So here’s the deal:  I am asthmatic, I have been since I swam in college.  I’ve learned that for my body a sinus infection gets into my chest FAST and then can turn into Bronchitis or Pneumonia.  As I’ve aged I have wanted to go more “natural” in my approach to the health issues I am prone to and these are the ones I’ve found and tried.

At the end of it though if I feel like crap for too long (fever, colored phlegm, etc.) I go to a doc and get antibiotics.

(By the way I wrote this so I would know where all this info is without having to Google like a crazy man when I’m sick )

For allergies
When allergies hit, I mixed a teaspoon of organic, unfiltered apple cider vinegar with “The Mother” (that part is important) into a glass of water and drank this three times a day. “The Mother” is simply a colony of beneficial bacteria present in some organic and unfiltered ACV brands. Check the label, it should list if it contains it. Read more here.

For pneumonia
You can also mix cayenne pepper in a cup of carrot juice. Both are beneficial for treating. Read more here.
