Friday, May 5, 2017 – Day 5
OTF at 6:30 am and burned 892 calories.  Now here’s the thing:  I don’t work out in the mornings simply because I like my sleep.  Case in point:  class started at 6:30, my time to leave the house was 6:00, so I set the alarm for 5 am.  I ended up waking up at 4:24 am because I was scared I’d over sleep!!!!!  That part sucked but the workout was right up my alley.  My break through happened after I realized that rowing is now a better warmup than the treadmill – probably because my fitness is higher.  Then we got to some intervals and I was a happy big daddy!!!!  They were basically power intervals – short intensity / short recovery – just what my body

Thursday, May 4, 2017 – Day 4
90 minutes of Aikido in the morning and burned 398 calories.
OTF in the evening and burned 822 calories.

I had 5 meals each in the 480 calorie range.
For the day I burned 3,426 calories.
I took in 2,767 calories.
The net deficit was 659 calories.
I slept 4:25 (stressed out about waking up for 6:30 am class, woke up at 4:25 am)
I drank 120 oz of water.
Bottom line – Today was a win but I am tired.

Wednesday, May 3, 2017 – Day 3
2 hours of Aikido in the evening and burned 441 calories.   Super advanced stuff, spent most of the class confused.  Did more Jiwaza and jacked it all up.

I had 5 meals each in the 480 calorie range.
For the day I burned 3,173 calories.
I took in 2,427 calories.
The net deficit was 746 calories.
I slept 7:25 (used Sleep Works but Amira got in our bed at 1 am)
I drank 129 oz of water.
Bottom line – Today was a win but I was hungry at the end of the day.

Tuesday, May 2, 2017 – Day 2
Got my PRP shot in the knees and then 2 hours later I did 2 hours of Aikido in the evening and burned 392 calories.   We started the class with stuff I can do but then quickly went into Koshi loads and taking the falls.  The loads means you’re literally supporting someones weight on your back – I got a big dude and it strained the crap out of my right knee.  I got wise after that and didn’t do anything that I considered high risk.  That’s a big thing for me – to back down when the risk is high.  It’s taken 3 years of my sensei’s contextualizing alternative thoughts.  Meaning, old Z would do something regardless of the risk because “I don’t want or need

So here’s the deal:  I have a massive athletic career in my 50 year old body – from being an NCAA I swimmer to Iron distance triathlete to elite cyclist to Aikido student, heck I even did Crossfit for a year.  I know all about performance, how to get it out of my body and the bodies of the people who have trusted me to get it out of theirs in a coaching scenario.  But at this moment in time at age 50 and being 100% committed to Aikido and progressing to Black Belt (and beyond) I found myself in a weird place.  I was fit for Aikido but not “fit” by my own standard.  So I decided to give OTF a try.  I knew very little about it but 2 things I knew were that it’s been the #1 fitness franchise for 4 years and never had a studio close down.  So I signed up and have

Natural Remedies for Asthmatics

So here’s the deal:  I am asthmatic, I have been since I swam in college.  I’ve learned that for my body a sinus infection gets into my chest FAST and then can turn into Bronchitis or Pneumonia.  As I’ve aged I have wanted to go more “natural” in my approach to the health issues I am prone to and these are the ones I’ve found and tried.

At the end of it though if I feel like crap for too long (fever, colored phlegm, etc.) I go to a doc and get antibiotics.

Ultimate Pancakes

This recipe is from my friend Lindsey Simpson (ask her how to get a box of the shakes)

(Per packet of Iced Lemon Cake Meal Replacement Shake)

  • 2 egg whites
  • 1/4 cup of milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon of baking powder
  • 1/2 of blueberries
  • Mix in a bowl with a hand mixer
  • Pour onto a pre-heated griddle (300 degrees) 1/4 cup at a time – 1 packet makes three 4 inch pancakes)
